Geoff Kelly Wine Reviews December 06: 5 stars
2004 [Blake Family Vineyard] Alluviale 18 ½ (*****)
Gimblett Gravels, Hawkes Bay, New Zealand: 14%; $27 [cork; DFB; Me 65%, CS 30, CF 5; 19 months in French oak 90% new; second wine of Blake Family Vineyard; www.alluviale.com]
Ruby, some carmine and velvet, in the middle for depth. Bouquet for this Alluviale shows a little more oak relative to the fruit, when compared with the 2005, but there is still very attractive floral, plummy and rich berry. Palate brings up the violets component of the bouquet, and the interplay of cassis and dark plums with the oak. This is not as rich as the $50 wines, but it is still gold-medal merlot / cabernet, in the New Zealand context, and delightful. Cellar 5 - 15 years.
